Call for papers | Victorian & Edwardian Theatre in Performance Music & Machinery – Stagecraft & Spectacle

Oct 5, 2022

Tyne Theatre & Opera House – Newcastle upon Tyne
13 -15 September 2023

The Tyne Theatre & Opera House is delighted to announce a 3-day conference as part of its National Lottery Heritage Fund project entitled The Drury Lane of the North to examine the inter-relationships between the stage, the orchestra pit, the performer and the audience during the Victorian & Edwardian periods. It will take place at the beautiful Grade I listed Tyne Theatre & Opera House which has a historically significant installation of original Victorian stage machinery. Between now and September 2023 the theatre will be undertaking further research and restoration works on the machinery and it is anticipated that practical demonstrations will be given during the conference.

This conference seeks to connect academic and practitioner historians, theatre and music professionals and enthusiasts of the stage from both the UK and around the world. For all accepted submissions the conference organisers will waive the speaker’s attendance fee and pay accommodation and travel costs within the UK.

Papers should be no longer than 20 minutes and may address any aspects of the stage during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, including but not limited to: relationships between the stage space and performance; the orchestra pit, and the stage; stage machinery and set; visual spectacle and the theatre; developments in opera, pantomime, theatrical dance and acrobatics; reflecting social change at the theatre; legal requirements for theatre owners.

Proposals should include a paper title, an abstract of no more than 350 words and a short biography and should be sent to conference@tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

Closing Date for submissions – 30 November 2022

The conference is organised by the Tyne Theatre & Opera House and supported by scholars from Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities under the leadership of Dr. David Wilmore (www.theatresearch.co.uk/about-us) who has been associated with Tyne Theatre & Opera House for over 40 years.
